For many years I have been providing food and water in order to attract wild birds in our back yard in New Jersey as well as in Florida. I have planted evergreens around the proprieties in order for the wild bird to nest. I also have provided water for drinking as well as for bathing, especially during the hot summer months. In my house in Elizabeth, NJ, I have a large fishpond, with a lot of aquatic plants; many species of birds every day come to drink in the fishpond. In the winter months when everything is frozen, I have an electric device that keeps a small area of the pond unfrozen in order for the fish to breathe. In that area, water is available, a lot of wild birds come to drink all winter long.

In Florida, I have created the same situation; many small birds came to visit my property every day and drank the water that was available. For the first few years that I lived in Marco Island, very few large birds such as Blackbirds and Crows wandered around my property and backyard private golf course. In the last three years, however, gradually the number of undesirable birds has increased, especially in fall 2006 to the first week of March 7, 2007, to the point that they became a nuisance. It seems that they have spread the good news and the original few birds have encouraged others to come by the hundreds. From December o6 to March 07 a variety of birds, large and small, have been present in my yard in very large numbers. The large birds devoured everything that was edible in my yard; fruits, tomatoes, vegetables. In desperation, I had to rush to Wall Mart and purchase a few scarecrows that I installed around my Orange trees and other fruit trees. Well, the scarecrows scared the hell out of all the wild birds. They all perch on trees from a considerable distance of my yard. They all stare at the scarecrows from a safe distance.

A couple weeks ago, while I was sitting inside my pool enclosure, I was watching numerous species of these wild birds, perching on the trees in next-door property and also in my back yard golf course. It seems that they were communicating with each other, a couple of bird of the large group were flying closer and closer by the scare crow's position. One bird approached a little too close, in doing so, the flapping of the wings made the scarecrow move a little. That bird was fast flying away, emitting sounding alarms, maybe saying, "LET'S GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE", and all the other birds flew away very fast, faster than hurricane winds.

Wherever there is food and water, wild birds will stay and breed and reproduce abundantly in the area too. My idea of providing food and water in my yards is to attract small songbirds such as American Goldfinches, Song Sparrows, and House Finches, also Virginian Cardinals and other similar birds. But, when Black birds, Crows, Starling, arrive, not only are they driving the smaller birds away, but also devour all the fruit and vegetables in their paths. These nasty birds ate all my Oranges, Tangerines, Papayas, Tomatoes and lettuces. I never ever have seen any wild birds consume leaf vegetables before. I guess this year because of the tremendous number of these nasty birds; nature does not supply them with sufficient food for their survivable. I never saw before such larger number of birds around. I don't know where they all came from. During the breeding season of 2006, I saw no breeding activity in all my areas of Union and Somerset County, New Jersey.

If you remember, during a good part of January, while I was in New Jersey, the temperature was very pleasant. The large number of these nasty birds wandered in the areas of New Jersey, actually devouring all the acorn seeds, leaving nothing for the poor squirrels!

I am sure that this unusual situation with the presence of such large numbers of Black Birds, Starling and other, has occurred in other areas of North America. Please, someone write about what you have seen in your area.

I have lived in Marco Island for over four years, the number of birds that I have seen in my propriety during last couple weeks of February and the first week of March 2007 was unbelievable. I spent hours chasing them out my yard in trying to salvage some fruit and vegetables and also the Palm nut that every year I collect to include in my parrot diets. I purchased six large scarecrows, after few days, they realized that the scarecrows were made out of plastic, and they could not harm them. Very clever birds to say the least!

Again, the same creator that put us on this earth has created all these critters, we most learn how to live together and share our world with all the other critters. We must try our best to protect our resources and also sharing some with other habitants of the planet earth.

I am in New Jersey for a few days, trying to salvage somehow my breeding season. I will be flying back to Marco Island, on the 14th of March. The Hospital and the Doctors are anxiously waiting for me to continue on subsidizing their livelihood.

I hope that many of you enjoying reading this off topic episode.
